HABIT (2010-2012)

A four-walled, fully furnished and functional American ranch house (stocked refrigerator, working stove, plumbing, running water) is constructed in an exhibition space. Three actors perform a specially commissioned 90-minute drama on a continuous loop for eight hours a day. Although their lines remain consistent, actors improvise staging to suit their needs—when they’re hungry, they cook; when they’re dirty, they wash. Spectators come and go as they please, circulating around the structure and eavesdropping on the action through open door- and window frames. Habit was installed at the Watermill Center, Toronto's Luminato Festival, MASS MoCA, and New York's Crossing the Line Festival.
